Class ALn 668 by Darkroom Daze

Diesel railcar class ALn 668 of the Italian State Railways passes eastwards over the viaduct in the centre of Catania (Sicily, Italy), within sight of the cathedral. Further on from here, to the L of the photo, the main line curves southward towards Siracusa and the southern tip of Sicily. This view is taken from the little park off via Jonica, between the fish market and and the bus station. The viaduct is built of local black lava rock (Etna lava) and limestone, in a style that nicely echoes the predominantly baroque style of the buildings in this central part of the city. It runs for about 500 m west of the main station, and shows up well in Google Satellite (search for 'via Jonica'). The street seen through the arches beyond the children's playground is via Cardinale Dusmet. (The Flickr map of Catania is almost useless for street-names as most of them aren't given. I've had to use Google Maps for the street names.) TRAINSPOTTER NOTES ALn is an acronym for Automotrice Leggera a Nafta, where nafta is Italian for 'naphtha' i.e. diesel fuel, hence 'self-powered diesel light railcar'. ALn 668 is a family of diesel railcars built by Fiat Ferroviaria for the Italian State Railway System (FS now Trenitalia). These diesel railcars were built during the period 1954-1983. The digits '68' in the class designation indicated the seating complement of the railcar. I don't have a record of what service this train was on. ----- Haydock, D., 2007. European handbook No. 6. Italian Railways. Locomotives & Multiple Units. 2nd edition. Platform 5 Publishing Ltd., Sheffield 192 pp. GEOLOGICAL NOTES "Mount Etna is composed for the most part of intermediate alkaline products, most of them porphyritic - the “etnaïtes” - that may be defined as sodic trachybasalts or trachyandesites." (Tanguy, 1978). ----- Tanguy, J.C., 1978. We spent the first day travelling from home in London to Paris, by Eurostar train, and were meant to the take an overnight train from Paris to Rome that same evening. But our Eurostar train out of London was badly delayed due to 'a fatality [unexplained - perhaps fortunately] on the train'. So we missed our onward connection to Rome and had an unexpected but happy second day in Paris. We left Paris that evening, on the equivalent Rome service arriving in Rome on our third day where we changed for our onward train, arriving in Catania (Sicily) that same evening. Our fourth day was our first full day in Sicily, and we spent this in the centre of Catania itself. By the end of the whole holiday trip we had seen things and sites from ancient Greek time to modern, so the trip felt like a mini Grand Tour. Or given the rich mythology of Sicily, Etna and the Straits of Messina (Odysseus, the Cyclops, Scylla & Charybdis, etc.) perhaps our trip was like a modern mini Odyssey of our times. Odysseus took ten years to get home. It took us ten trains - but no monsters. ---------- Photo Darkroom Daze © Creative Commons.
